Our Approach to Coaching

Our approach to coaching
Put simply, we help you to become a great coach. We do this in a small and select group that has never more than 12 attendees in size.

We train, mentor and support coaches through their own growth and development and during the building of their own coaching practice.

Coaching approaches
There is a range of differing approaches to coaching. Each seeks to get the most positive results for the client by using slightly differing techniques. Most are based on either counselling or psychological formats.
After looking through the sites and prospectuses of many coaching schools we have noticed that many only teach one approach to their students. Whilst their graduates will still be able to deal with most things effectively it will possibly leave them lacking in some situations.  At CILC we teach you skills from several of the coaching models, (in bold below).

The key approaches to coaching:
• Solution-focused Coaching
• Transpersonal Coaching
• Cognitive-Behavioural Coaching
• Emotional Intelligence Coaching
• NLP Coaching

• Appreciative Coaching
• Existential Coaching
• Transactional Coaching

Solutions-focused Coaching
Focuses mainly on the existing abilities and resources and not on the shortcomings and problems that need to be redressed. The approach creates quite rapid change through the use of small manageable steps. Each of these builds on previous progress so compounds past successes.

Cognitive-Behavioural Coaching (CBC)
Focuses on connections made by the coachee between external events, their internal responses to them and the resultant actions that occur. It allow the coachee to recognise that the associations and responses to stimuli are within their own control when they are understood and consciously managed.

NLP Coaching
NLP Coaching is similar to CBC however; the techniques used in NLP can create incredibly rapid change. Many people believe NLP work is not 'proper' coaching as generally defined and accepted. But when used in certain coaching situations NLP can be very powerful for belief changing and goal setting.

Emotional Intelligence Coaching
Focuses on the management of the coachee's emotions to reach their full potential. By its very nature the approach induces a strong focus on the emotional state of the coachee, especially self-awareness, empathy and emotional self-management.

Appreciative Coaching
Focuses on helping the coachee to recover their lost 'joy of living'. It draws on their strengths and looks at the positive aspects of life. It allows the coachee to explore their dreams and possiblities to encourage a metamorphic experience.

Each of these approaches will have situations where it is most effective, therefore it is best practice to be skilled in several so that you can offer the best coaching experience to your coachees.

Transpersonal Coaching
Focuses on the coachee’s spiritual dimension. This approach is most effectively for those wishing to develop an insight of their place in the bigger sceme of things. The coachee may feel the desire to explore a particular situation as a part of their broader purpose and meaning in life.
